Do you need a reservation to camp at Big Bend? ›

Big Bend National Park Campgrounds

The three park-run campgrounds are Chisos Basin Campground, Rio Grande Village Campground, and Cottonwood Campground. All Big Bend camping sites require advance reservations booked (up to 6 months in advance) through recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777.

Advance camping and overnight lodging reservations can be made up to six months in advance of a planned arrival date.

Spring, specifically March and April, is another good time to visit, but it's essential to be prepared for the possibility of occasional rain showers. Keep in mind that summer months can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100°F, which can make camping and outdoor activities less enjoyable.

Although the new law allows for open-carry within the park, the following federal regulations remain unchanged and will continue to be strictly enforced throughout Big Bend National Park. 36 CFR 2.4 (A) (1) (ii) using or discharging a firearm is prohibited.

In general, you can expect to pay between $25 to $35 per night for a standard campsite. Rates may be higher for premium sites or those with full hookups.

South Higgins is definitely the larger of the two, with more amenities and more campsites. During the summer, expect both to be filled to capacity on the weekends, and many weekdays as well near the holidays. Get your reservations in early.

It is due to planned enhancements, including paving the main road, expanding parking and enhancing the entrance. Ludington State Park will be closed from Sept. 3, 2024, through July 1, 2025 for upgrades.

Even though the visitors were planning four months in advance, the available vehicle reservations for Going-to-the-Sun Road were sold out within 30 minutes. Vehicle reservations for all other areas were distributed within 10 minutes of their release.

Visitors without a vehicle reservation can enter any entrance before 6 am or after 3 pm. As space permits, you can also enter Two Medicine and the east entrance of Going-to-the-Sun Road without a vehicle reservation at any time.

As of February 22, 2010, a federal law allows people who can legally possess firearms under applicable federal, state, and local laws, to legally possess firearms in this park. Federal law also prohibits firearms in certain facilities in this park; those places are marked with signs at all public entrances.

Big Bend National Park is a major draw for many campers who come to the Lone Star State. While there aren't free campsites at the park, campers can take advantage of low-cost backcountry camping. The cost is $10, and the permit allows you a 14 total nights stay per year.

Big Bend is a HOT desert park. Temps will reach 100+ degrees by late morning and remain at extreme dangerous levels until long after sunset. Hikers should STAY OFF trails in the afternoon. Stay hydrated and limit exposure.

Things to know about Big Bend backcountry permits:

Permits for desert wilderness backpacking and the primitive roadside sites along Maverick Road and the River Road are available in person only at Panther Junction and Chisos Basin Visitor Centers, 24 hours in advance of your first night's stay.

Some popular county parks to pitch a tent include Barview Jetty Park, Kilchis River Park, Trask River Park, Webb Park, Whalen Island Park and Woods Park. Additional camping sites on the Oregon Coast are located at Cape Lookout State Park, Nehalem Bay State Park and Oswald West State Park.
