The solutions that I have found that work best for me are soy, almond, or coconut milk. Here is a recipe using these three alternatives to help you make some waffles without any dairy! In this recipe I also use yeast, but if don’t need it, you can find waffles without milk recipe with no using yeast at the end of this guide.

This process starts with mixing together the ingredients in a bowl until it looks like batter. Then you put your yeast in warm water and sugar before letting it sit for about five minutes; this creates the leavening yeast property that provides bubbles of carbon dioxide yeast needs to rise in order to produce gas pockets inside the dough.

While the yeast is doing its work, you mix the flour, water, and oil in a separate bowl until it looks like batter. Then you mix all of your ingredients together in a bowl and you let the dough rise until it doubles in size. This will take about an hour depending on what temperature your kitchen is at. It is better to have a nice warm place for this to happen so that it will rise faster!

The next step is to start preheating your waffle iron and set out whatever toppings or fillings you want to use such as butter or syrup. Next you can choose whether or not to put your batter in a blender or mixer.

If you decide to use a blender, you will need to blend the ingredients together and then pour them into a bowl and let it rise. If you decide to use a mixer, then you will just put the wet ingredients into the bowl and mix with an electric mixer until it is smooth, and then add it to your dry ingredients.

Then let it rise again before adding other ingredients that are time sensitive such as chocolate chips or fruit. Then preheat your waffle iron while you have fun making creative designs! Once it is time, grease the griddle before putting about 1/2 cup of batter onto each square. They should be about 3/4 of an inch thick and about 4 inches across.

Once the waffles are on the griddle, cook for about 3-5 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown. You can add fillings such as butter and syrup on top while they are still hot to let them melt right in. Then serve and enjoy!

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I Use Water Instead Of Milk In Waffles?

Milk gives waffles a nice, rich flavor and a smooth texture. Water can give a similar desired effect, but it does not provide the same deep taste.

  • Are Pancake And Waffle Mix The Same Thing?

No pancake and waffle mix are the same things. Pancake mixes typically contain no fat which is why whole wheat pancakes using a pancake mix will be dense. Waffle mixes contain more fat which is what helps to make them fluffy. What’s easy about this recipe for waffles without milk though is that it doesn’t require many special ingredients either!

  • What Can You Add To Waffle Mix?

There are many different ways that you can go about the process of making waffles. You can choose to use pancake mix or pancake flour, for example, which will give your waffles a more cake-like flavor. If you’re in the mood for something sweeter than traditional pancakes, then adding sugar or brown sugar to the batter may be just what you need. And if you want something more decadent than traditional syrup on your waffles, then melted chocolate works wonderfully!

FAQs

Can you use water instead of milk for waffles? ›

Water doesn't affect the waffle flavor, but it will produce a crispier, more flaky edge. Dairy thickens the batter and gives a rich flavor, but there's no significant loss by using water instead.

Is it cheaper to make your own waffles? ›

Homemade waffles are not only tastier and more satisfying, but you can also control the ingredients that go into them. This means that you can make them healthier by using whole wheat flour or adding in some extra protein powder. Plus, they're a lot cheaper than buying premade mix from the store.

Do you have to put oil in a waffle maker? ›

Grease the maker before you pour the batter the first time.

Yes, the waffle iron is nonstick, but you still should hit those plates with either cooking spray, or brush on some neutral oil. I don't recommend butter since it can actually make the waffles stick.

Can I use water instead of milk? ›

In most cases, you can swap milk for water and vice versa using a 1:1 ratio. For example, if your mix or recipe calls for ½ cup of milk but you don't have it, add ½ cup of water.

How do I substitute milk for pancakes? ›

The top pancake milk substitutes are heavy cream, half and half, yogurt, sour cream, coconut milk, oat milk, almond milk, and water. Some provide more flavor or a fluffier texture, so if you're aiming for a particular type of pancake, consider each milk substitute in pancakes for its unique flavor and texture.

Can you substitute water for milk with pancake mix? ›

If your pancake mix simply calls for water, substitute the same amount of milk and enjoy an airier texture. For guaranteed moisture and richness, add some melted butter to your batter. A few tablespoons of Greek yogurt or ricotta cheese will give your pancakes a richer flavor.

Why are homemade waffles soggy? ›

Not waiting until the iron heats up properly means your waffles will cook, but never achieve that satisfyingly crisp exterior. Overworking the batter will leave your waffles dense and chewy instead of light and airy. And stacking even the most perfect waffles will cause them to become soggy and limp in minutes.

Why do restaurant waffles taste better? ›

When the batter is made from scratch it can be formulated to taste however the chef likes. You can't really do much with Bisquick. Restaurants also have a slew of toppings that you can have piled onto your waffle. You can prepare the same toppings at home but most people don't bother.

What is the secret to making good waffles? ›

Add cornstarch.

If you're making waffles with baking powder and baking soda, adding cornstarch to the mix will get you waffles that are crisp on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. Because waffle recipes vary, start with ¼ cup and work in as much as ½ cup to get the desired effect.

Why are my homemade waffles not crispy? ›

The problem is moisture. You need some of it to make sure your waffles are tender, but too much and that extra moisture will quickly soften the waffle's outer crust. Buttermilk is also a tricky ingredient because it tends to make a heavier batter, which results in less crispy waffles.

Do you spray Pam on a waffle maker? ›

If your waffle iron or pan has a nonstick surface, you should not use cooking spray. Cooking spray builds up on nonstick surfaces and eventually becomes tacky–rendering the non-stick coating useless. Brush oil lightly over the surface of your pan instead: if the spray build-up hasn't ruined the pan, this should work.

Why do you put oil in waffle mix but not in pancake mix? ›

Waffle batters contain a higher proportion of fat than pancake or crêpe batters, as the extra fat helps to keep the waffles soft. Nigella's recipe uses 125ml (1/2 cup) of vegetable oil. Generally you can switch oil for melted butter in a waffle recipe.

Can you put butter in waffle iron? ›

Instead, you can use butter or oil to coat the waffle iron before cooking. You can also use a pastry brush to apply butter or oil to the waffle iron. This will help prevent the batter from sticking to the waffle iron while also providing a nice, even coating.

What is the substitute of milk in breakfast? ›

Alternative breakfast, how to replace milk

Those who are intolerant or want to replace milk can opt for soy milk, rice milk or almond milk , easily available in any supermarket. In specialized organic shops you can also find dried fruit, coconut and hemp seed milk.

What can I substitute for milk in Bisquick waffles? ›

A4: Yes, you can make Bisquick waffles without milk. Substitute milk with an equal amount of dairy-free alternatives like almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk.

Can I use butter instead of milk? ›

Use 1 cup of water and 1-1/2 teaspoons of butter for every 1 cup of milk called for in the recipe. The extra butter will help your baked goods stay moist.

What is the best milk alternative for cooking? ›

Soy generally works best for baking and cooking in my experience, and it has the best protein. Rice and almond tend to be too thin, and even unsweetened oat tends to be too sweet in most cooking for me. I love using soy milk for its neutral taste and high protein value.
